An online conference presented by the Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association, Proclaiming Christ 2008, will take place Sept. 16-18, with all presentations, exhibits and discussion groups remaining active 24 hours a day through Oct. 16.
The conference features four keynote presentations, including: “A People Gathered and Sent” by Bishop Sam Jacobs of Houma-Thibodaux; “American Catholics Today” by Dr. Mary Gautier, senior research associate at the Center of Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University; “Reaching Today’s Inactive Catholics” By Father Frank DeSiano, C.S.P., author and life-long advocate of Catholic evangelization; and “Models of Evangelization in American Catholicism” by Father Timothy Byerley, director of the Collegium for Faith and Culture in the Diocese of Camden, N.J.
Conference participants will also experience daily prayer with faith sharing; live Q and A with the day’s presenter; the “Ministry Café” with numerous discussion groups for all; an Exhibit Hall where participants will be put in touch with evangelization resources and services; and exhibitors booths where participants can interact with representatives online. All presentations, exhibits and discussion groups will be available and running through Oct. 16.
Although the one-on-one personal encounter is still the most effective method of evangelization, the Internet is “one of the major players” in 21st century Catholic evangelization, according to PNCEA president Father Kenneth Boyack, C.S.P.
“For some people this is quite new,” Father Boyack said. “The online conference gives people a greater sense and new understanding of the missionary character of the Catholic Church.”
